Moon phase and nocturnal density of Atlantic salmon parr in the Sainte-Marguerite River, Québec

چکیده
Nocturnal underwater counts of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were made on four consecutive occasions (two lunar cycles, samplings at both the full and new moon) at four 40m long sites in the Sainte-Marguerite River, Québec, Canada, between 30 June and 14 August 2003. Atlantic salmon parr counts did not differ significantly between moon phases. Cloud cover ranged from 0 to 100% during the study, and had no significant effect on parr counts. There were significantly more Atlantic salmon parr in the near shore than in the midstream areas. The findings of this study suggest that the sampling strategy of summer studies aimed at assessing population abundance or developing habitat quality models can be designed without taking moon phase or cloud cover into consideration, but it should account for the higher relative abundance of Atlantic salmon parr in the near shore areas as compared to areas closer to the middle of streams. # 2005 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is a migratory species
that has a remarkably variable and flexible life history. Adult salmon spawn in fresh water in the autumn and winter, burying their eggs in river bed gravels (Stabell, 1984); the eggs hatch and the fry emerge the following spring. Young fish, known as parr, spend between 1 and 5 years in the river before smolting and migrating to the sea. Oceanic migrations take salmon to feeding grounds where ...
متن کاملHistopathological study of gills in experimentally amoebic gill disease (AGD) infected Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, L.
Amoebic gill disease (AGD) is the most important parasitic disease of Atlantic salmon industry inAustralia. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) experimentally infected with Neoparamoeba sp. apparently showedAGD gross signs on the gill and an amoebic-associated gill pathology. Physico-chemical factors of waterduring the experiment were monitored regularly and were approximately constant (temperature: ...
متن کاملAlternative reproductive tactics increase effective population size and decrease inbreeding in wild Atlantic salmon
While nonanadromous males (stream-resident and/or mature male parr) contribute to reproduction in anadromous salmonids, little is known about their impacts on key population genetic parameters. Here, we evaluated the contribution of Atlantic salmon mature male parr to the effective number of breeders (Nb) using both demographic (variance in reproductive success) and genetic (linkage disequilibr...
متن کاملEffect of feeding rate on nutrient digestibility in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.
A digestibility trial was conducted to examine the effect of feeding rate on dry matter, gross energy, crude protein and phosphorus digestibility in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Duplicate groups of fish were fed 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 and 1.9% BW/day. The faeces were collected by Guelph-type collectors for five successive days. Dry matter, protein and phosphorus digestibility’s were all s...
متن کاملNFAT5 genes are part of the osmotic regulatory system in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
The anadromous Atlantic salmon utilizes both fresh and salt water (FW and SW) habitats during its life cycle. The parr-smolt transformation (PST) is an important developmental transition from a FW adapted juvenile parr to a SW adapted smolt. Physiological changes in osmoregulatory tissues, particularly the gill, are key in maintaining effective ion regulation during PST. Changes are initiated p...
